Somewhere between the reboot and a (discretely) alternative universe, the generously titled Neon Genesis Evangelion: Legend of the Piko Piko Middle School Students is a book for the initiates of the NERV & Co universe.
The abundant references to the original manga will go from the rather obvious to the most esoteric of secret handshakes.
However, the fact that this is, at present, the only Evangelion manga being regularly published in Japan is significative of the cult’s scale. Experts abound.
In charge of the fundamental characters, designed originally by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (Summer, Wars, Wolf Children, etc), is the team of Yushi Kawata and Yukito (script and linework, respectively). The chibi drama-releasing moments are here abandoned in favour of a narrative permanently anchored in humour and the exploration of the cast’s most typical traits. With 168 pages, the second volume of the TPB edition of Neon Genesis Evangelion: Legend of the Piko Piko Middle School Students from Dark Horse will be published right after Xmas.
